A Frequent Traveller's Guide to Jovan
Volume II
Part 5: "Caspar"

Story Rating: Hard R/NC-17
Story Warnings explicit heterosexual and homosexual sex, slavery, violence, torture and drug use.
Story Summary Since the death of their brother the Emperor Dolmus brought the royal brothers Valentin and Cassius back to Monsilys, capital of the great Jovani Empire, Valentin has cured the boredom of court life with poppy-sap and women, while for Cassius the remedy has been ale and the result much the same. Then an ill-fated duel causes their niece the Empress to send them to Gallica to deal with a problem there, and they find themselves drawn ever more back into the world of Jovani politics: a world their brother banished them from seventeen years earlier. As Valentin veers from disaster to disaster, always running from his past and a life he would prefer to forget, Cassius is fascinated by a damaged boy he rescues from a slave brothel. Valentin's weapon is sly diplomacy, while Cassius prefers the honesty of the sword, but will either be enough to protect Jovan, and themselves?
Notes: Volumes I and II are already written; you can check them out at my website (along with Vol III as it's written), as free eBooks (Volume I and Volume II) or I will be posting them here at a rate of one chapter a week, which means Livejournal will catch up to the website in around July/August 2013. I sincerely hope you enjoy the story. :)

“Have you met Prince Caspar of Toqueia?” asked Valentin as they rode down the steep streets of Monsilys towards the docks.

“No,” said Cassius.

“I thought you might have met him on the southern campaign.” Valentin held the reins loosely in one hand, the other resting on his sword hilt.

“The only Confederated Provinces soldiers on that campaign were Laruan, I believe.”

“I’ve heard he’s a nice young man--very handsome,” said Valentin.Collapse )

ORIGINAL FIC - Treasure

Title: Treasure
Rating: NC-17 - non-con, sexual slavery, physical violence, emotional abuse
Summary: "Do you know what the King said to me?" said the master, striking his cane against his shining black boot. "I give you one of the finer treasures of my palace. But do with him what you will—I have so many treasures I would not miss this one."
Notes: This is in response to a prompt from the glorious pierrot_dreams for "Llewellyn, fear." It's a prequel to my ongoing sprawling political fantasy/comedy of manners/gay romance A Frequent Traveller's Guide to Jovan (it's like Game of Thrones! But fewer characters randomly die!). The story, however, stands on its own - you don't have to have read, read, or want to read AFTGTJ for it to make sense.

Cloud knelt. The room was cold, and his body weight seemed unable to warm the heavy platinum jewellery that weighed him down.

'Do you know what the King said to me?' said the masterCollapse )

Wandering in and out of focus, Cassius swiped his hand across his brow. “It’s time to go, brother,” he said, serving each word as if it were a delicacy on a platter.

'Not on your life,' said Valentin. Collapse )

The escort lifted his heavily robed arm and banged on the door four times. A moment later it opened, and an exquisite boy clad in a loincloth and heavy gold jewellery ushered them in. The escort remained on the other side, and bid them farewell.

“Prince Cassius, Lord Valentin,” said the boy, his voice soft, smooth and subservient and his command of their language musical and competent. “I trust your journey was pleasant. Prince, we have placed you in one of our best rooms.”

Cassius nodded, distracted by the sound of the doors clicking shut behind them. The boy bowed and gestured to another young man, this one wearing a leather belt over his floor-length white robe, who stepped forward, saying, “If my lords would follow me?”

In front of them was another hallway, while to the right a staircase descended. At the foot of this, they walked out into an airy cloistered courtyard. Cassius glanced over his shoulder. “Er… boy,” he said. “Excuse me.”

The young man stopped and turned. He bowed to Cassius, his hands clasped. “Prince?” Thick, curly brown hair hid his face.

“Have we left Hamami?”

“No, Prince Cassius.” He looked up. “The Palace of Hamami spreads throughout the city. Many of the precincts are linked via bridges like the one you just crossed.”

Cassius rubbed his hand through his hair. “I see. Which, ah, precinct are we in now?”

Grey eyes considered him. “This is known as the Pleasure Garden. If my lords will follow me?”

The morning was cloudy and cold. Cassius woke reluctantly; this was not a day to which he looked forward with pleasure. Ivery Malventus, the Jovani fool at the centre of the plot Cassius had uncovered at Blacktower Castle, had been interrogated, found guilty, and sentenced to crucifixion. Today his sentence would be carried out.

Although Adrienne would not lower herself to acknowledge such a futile and pointless rebellion, it behoved Cassius to witness the execution and report back. Even Valentin had been excused, because the negotiations with Toqueia, opened after Jovan’s intervention in Ilas, were reaching a new level, and Valentin’s tricky brain was desperately needed at the negotiating table.

The worst part was that the execution wasn’t until dusk, so Cassius had somehow to make his way through the day until then: a day which currently looked more-or-less empty.Collapse )

The Palace of the Keys

Dude, dude, dude - someone has been reviving all the old keyfic using the Wayback Machine. That is Beyond Amazing.

The [new] Palace of the Keys, a glorious home of all the old Key Games. Does remembering the key games make me an old timer? One person (the trainer) would do up a character sheet for a (male) slave, then another would claim it and write a story or do art based on the slave. There are some great stories in the archive - there are also a couple by yours truly, but I won't vouch for quality given how long ago I wrote them. LOLOL.

The original inspiration for Cassius and Valentin, and CLoud/Llewellyn from AFTGTJ came from one of the keyfics I wrote - the Cloud Key. In fact, part 3 of the story is almost a straight rewrite of the keyfic, except like... better. They haven't got the weather keys up yet, though so it is not currently possible to compare the two.

I also wrote the Sphinx Key, but for the love of god read the warnings. o_o Heavens to Betsy I was a deranged teenager.

Excuse me while I go and share my excitement over this discovery with slavefics and orig_slavefic.
I arted! Here is a picture of Lady Moire of the Lakes, a supporting character in one of my S2B2 fics, “The King of Bayan”, which I have been playing around with rewriting for the past couple of months.

I know it is odd of me to illustrate one of the female characters in an M/M romance story I wrote for an M/M romance zine, but… women’s fashions/hairstyles are just so much more fun to draw. Life so difficult!

Also, image reference was from a photoshoot by this out of control amazing historical costumer.

The sea routes to Ilas were too dangerous, so the Jovani delegation had to travel through Skya and the Confederated Provinces. A ship journey of four days became a two-week gallop overland. Cassius and Valentin rode ahead with a company of Imperial Guards, while the legions travelled more slowly behind.

They were met outside Karolas by the King’s Own guards and escorted into the city. Karolas was built on the neck of the Ilasian peninsula, astride the long river which carried goods south from Tyder Bay. It was a sprawling city which had overgrown its bounds; only the very wealthy could afford to live within the city walls, and lacking the ability to build out, they had built up instead.

As they crossed into the walled town, Valentin looked up. Collapse )

Almost Two Years Ago

Monsilys came into sight across rolling hills of golden barley, punctuated by groves of cypress trees and white-and-red farm houses. The city stood proudly in the distance, sunlight glinting off the bright white stone of the palace, which sat highest of all, gazing across the plain. Radiating out and vanishing beneath the high stone walls were the houses of the aura families.

Cassius had changed horses an hour back at a legionary waystation and already his new mount was speckled with sweat. He dismounted and walked her along the high way for a while, until her sides stopped heaving, then swung back on and nudged her into a gallop. His blue-trimmed cloak marked him as a member of the royal family, and other travellers, from carters to merchants to aura in their elaborate litters, pulled aside to let him pass. They murmured behind their hands: is that Lord Cassius back from the Tarian Front? What is he doing returning to Monsilys? Must be something has happened to draw him back in such a pelt.

The ones travelling from Monsilys leaned their heads close together and said knowingly, he must be going back for the funeral.Collapse )

Open for prompting~.

So, to celebrate my moving off a project at work that was DRAINING THE LIFE OUT OF ME DAY BY DAY, I opened the floor up to prompts over at the Jovan website!

Give me a prompt of a character and a word (e.g. Llewellyn, cold) and I will write you a little story based on it!

It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s easy, so prompt away!

So far I've got

  1. Cassius, drool

  2. Caspar, tempted

  3. Llewellyn, scared

  4. Adelais vengeful

  5. Valentin bi-curious

  6. Cassius, dancing

  7. Adrienne, first crush.

  8. Llewellyn, kicking ass

I am willing to write ten stories, so prompt me here or prompt me there; I'll take prompts from anywhere. ;)

Not sure what to prompt? The People and Places page may serve as an inspiration. Or, prompt me with the usual suspects – I never tire of writing about Cassius and Valentin!
